KASHMIR GREAT LAKE

7 Days

FROM DEHRADUN

Overview

The Kashmir Great Lakes (KGL) trek is a truly iconic and breathtaking high-altitude alpine trek in the Kashmir Valley, renowned for its string of stunning glacial lakes, vast meadows, and panoramic Himalayan views. Often considered one of India’s most beautiful treks, it typically spans 6 to 8 days, covering a distance of approximately 68-75 km.

The trek usually commences from Sonamarg (specifically Shitkadi, a few kilometers from Sonamarg) and concludes at Naranag, or vice versa. It is generally recommended to start from Sonamarg for a more gradual ascent and better acclimatization.

The difficulty level of the KGL trek is rated as moderate to difficult. It demands good physical fitness, endurance, and prior experience with multi-day high-altitude treks. Trekkers navigate challenging terrains including rocky paths, steep ascents and descents over mountain passes, and sometimes snow patches, particularly on the higher passes. Long trekking days (often 6-10 hours) also contribute to its demanding nature.

The trek is a visual feast, living up to its name by connecting multiple high-altitude alpine lakes. You’ll encounter magnificent bodies of water such as Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar (known as the “Lake of Flowers”), Satsar (a group of seven interconnected lakes), Gangabal, and Nundkol. Each lake boasts unique hues, from emerald green to deep turquoise, often reflecting the surrounding snow-capped peaks.
