Overview
Bhrigu Lake is a captivating high-altitude glacial lake nestled in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Located to the east of the formidable Rohtang Pass, it sits at an elevation of approximately 4,300 meters (14,100 feet) above sea level. This pristine oval-shaped lake holds immense spiritual significance, being named after Maharishi Bhrigu, a revered Hindu sage who is believed to have meditated by its tranquil waters.
The trek to Bhrigu Lake is widely regarded as an excellent option for beginners looking to experience a high-altitude Himalayan trek without requiring extensive prior experience. Typically a 3-4 day journey, it offers a quick ascent to significant heights. The base for the trek is usually Manali, with the actual trailhead starting from Gulaba village, which is about a 1-hour drive away.
The trail to Bhrigu Lake is renowned for its strikingly beautiful and diverse landscapes. Right from the initial stages, trekkers are greeted with vast, undulating alpine meadows (bugyals), a distinctive feature that sets this trek apart from many others where such meadows appear only at higher altitudes. These grasslands are particularly vibrant and carpeted with wildflowers during the spring and summer months (May to July). The path also winds through dense forests of deodar, pine, and birch, offering a refreshing change of scenery.
