FROM DEHRADUN
Overview
The Tarsar Marsar trek is a captivating high-altitude trek located in the Anantnag district of Kashmir, known for its twin alpine lakes and dramatic shifts in scenery. It offers a unique blend of lush meadows, dense forests, and stark, beautiful high-altitude landscapes.
This trek typically lasts 6 to 8 days, covering an approximate distance of 47-50 km. The journey usually begins from Aru Village, a picturesque hamlet near Pahalgam, which serves as the base camp. The trek follows a circular or semi-circular route, often connecting the two main lakes, Tarsar and Marsar, with a third, Sundersar, also on the itinerary. The highest point reached is typically a ridge offering views of Marsar Lake, at an elevation of around 4,100 to 4,200 meters (13,400 to 13,800 feet).
The difficulty level of the Tarsar Marsar trek is generally considered moderate. While it doesn’t involve highly technical climbing, it does require a good level of physical fitness due to significant altitude gains, varying terrain including rocky sections, and occasional steep ascents and descents. The weather at high altitudes can be unpredictable, adding to the challenge.
The trek is a visual delight, characterized by the stunning Tarsar Lake, an almond-shaped, turquoise alpine lake often considered one of the most beautiful in Kashmir, and its elusive twin, Marsar Lake, which is often shrouded in clouds. Trekkers also visit Sundersar Lake, forming a trilogy of pristine water bodies. The trail winds through sprawling green meadows like Lidderwat and Shekwas, often carpeted with vibrant wildflowers during peak season. You’ll also encounter dense pine, fir, and birch forests, gushing streams, and views of surrounding peaks, including the prominent Mount Kolahoi.
One of the unique aspects of this trek is the opportunity to witness the nomadic life of the Gujjar and Bakarwal shepherd communities, with their traditional huts and grazing flocks.
