RUPIN PASS TREK

Overview

The Rupin Pass trek is a classic and highly sought-after high-altitude trek in the Indian Himalayas, known for its dramatic changes in scenery and the thrill of crossing a challenging pass. It’s a cross-over trek, meaning it starts in one state (Uttarakhand) and ends in another (Himachal Pradesh), specifically connecting the Rupin Valley to the Sangla Valley.

The trek usually spans 7 to 9 days, covering a distance of approximately 50-56 km. It typically begins from Dhaula in Uttarakhand or sometimes from Jiskun or Gosangu in Himachal Pradesh, culminating in Sangla, Himachal Pradesh.

The difficulty level is generally considered moderate to difficult. It demands good physical fitness, endurance, and prior experience with multi-day high-altitude treks. The highest point, Rupin Pass, sits at an impressive altitude of around 4,650 meters (15,250 feet) to 4,700 meters (15,350 feet).

The Rupin Pass trek offers an incredibly diverse landscape. You’ll journey through dense forests of oak, rhododendron, pine, and deodar, charming traditional villages with unique architecture like Jakha (the “hanging village”), and vast, sprawling alpine meadows like Saruwas Thatch and Dhanderas Thatch. The trail often follows the roaring Rupin River, crossing numerous streams and waterfalls, including the magnificent three-stage Rupin Waterfall, which is a major highlight. You’ll encounter challenging sections, including steep ascents over rocky terrain, sometimes narrow paths cut into rock faces, and significant snow patches, especially near the pass itself.

The highlight of the trek is undoubtedly the pass crossing itself. The final ascent to Rupin Pass involves navigating a steep gully, often covered in snow, which can be exhilarating and demanding. From the top, you are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and a dramatic shift in scenery as you descend into the picturesque Sangla Valley, known for its lush green pastures and views of the Kinnaur Kailash range.
