FROM DEHRADUN
Overview
The Kedartal trek is a challenging but incredibly rewarding high-altitude Himalayan trek in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India. It leads to the pristine glacial Kedartal Lake, situated at an altitude of approximately 4,750 to 4,912 meters (15,580 to 16,119 feet) above sea level. This emerald-green lake is fed by the melting waters of the Kedartal Glacier and is considered the source of the Kedar Ganga River, a significant tributary of the Bhagirathi River.
The trek typically starts from the holy town of Gangotri, which itself is at an elevation of around 3,048 meters (10,000 feet). The total trekking distance varies, but is generally around 28-38 km round trip from Gangotri, usually completed over 5 to 7 days, including acclimatization days.
The difficulty level of the Kedartal trek is rated as moderate to difficult. It’s not recommended for beginners without prior high-altitude trekking experience. The trail involves significant altitude gain in a relatively short span, steep ascents over rocky and bouldery terrain, narrow paths (like the famous “Spider Wall”), and sometimes landslide-prone sections. Trekkers need a good level of physical fitness and mental preparedness to tackle these challenges and the unpredictable Himalayan weather.
The route takes you through the beautiful Gangotri National Park, characterized by dense coniferous forests of pine and fir in the lower sections, transitioning to birch (bhoj) forests, and eventually opening up to stark alpine wilderness as you gain altitude. Major campsites along the way include Bhoj Kharak and Kedar Kharak.
One of the main draws of this trek is the unparalleled views of some of the most iconic Himalayan peaks. From Kedartal Lake, you get a direct and spectacular reflection of the towering Thalaysagar Peak (6,904 m), often considered one of the most beautiful mountains in India. Other prominent peaks visible include Bhrigupanth, Manda, Gangotri, Bhagirathi, and Meru.
