FROM DEHRADUN
Overview
Har Ki Dun, often referred to as the “Valley of Gods” or “Valley of Shiva,” is a picturesque, cradle-shaped hanging valley nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India. Situated within the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park, it’s a popular trekking destination known for its stunning natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and relatively moderate difficulty level, making it accessible to both seasoned trekkers and adventurous beginners.
The trek typically starts from Sankri village, which serves as the base camp for several treks in the region. From Sankri, a short drive leads to Taluka, the actual trailhead. The trek to Har Ki Dun usually spans 6-7 days, covering a total distance of around 50-57 kilometers (round trip). The valley itself sits at an altitude of approximately 3,566 meters (11,700 feet).
One of the defining features of the Har Ki Dun trek is its diverse landscape. Trekkers journey through dense forests of deodar, pine, and rhododendron, where sunlight filters through the canopy, creating a magical atmosphere. The trail frequently follows the Supin River, with its soothing gurgle accompanying much of the route. As one ascends, the forests give way to vast, open alpine meadows, or “bugyals,” which are carpeted with vibrant wildflowers during the spring and summer months. In winter, these meadows transform into a pristine white wonderland.
The valley is surrounded by an impressive amphitheater of snow-capped peaks, including the formidable Swargarohini I, II, and III, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak. The views of these majestic mountains are a constant reward throughout the trek, particularly from the Har Ki Dun campsite. Mythology often connects Har Ki Dun to the Mahabharata epic, with local legends suggesting it was a path taken by the Pandavas on their ascent to heaven via the Swargarohini peaks.
